Allegiant’s turnaround: it would purchase 50 Boeing 737 MAX

2022 could kick off on the right foot for Boeing if Allegiant’s potential purchase of 50 737 MAX aircraft valued at USD 5 billion at list prices is finally confirmed, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing sources close to the case.

The U.S. manufacturer had recently lost the preference of two classic customers of its narrowbody family, KLM, and Qantas, so gaining Allegiant, whose fleet is composed entirely of Airbus aircraft, has significant symbolic value.

Allegiant currently operates 34 Airbus A319s and 86 A320s with an average age of almost 15 years, so it is becoming necessary to activate a replacement plan.

Reuters reports that sources close to Allegiant indicated that the tourist travel market is returning massively as opposed to the business travel market, which is essential for this low-cost airline specialized in this segment. They also indicate that Allegiant’s choice would have been between the 737 MAX 7 and the A220.

In early December, Allegiant announced together with Viva Aerobus the launch of a commercial alliance to operate its networks between Mexico and the United States, the first of its kind between two low-cost airlines, which also meant the contribution of USD 50 million to enter the Mexican company’s capital.
