HAL started flight testing of the Tejas Mk-1A
Flight tests of the LCA Tejas MK-1A (Light Combat Aircraft Mark-1A) have started from the first week of May, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) sources associated with the project said.
An official, who is part of the project, told The Indian Express on condition of anonymity, that the flight tests were kept secret. «We did not publicly announce the tests. HAL has upgraded an aircraft whose serial production number is SP-25, which was at the Tejas Mk1 level, to the Tejas Mk1A level. The SP-25 and one more aircraft, which is undergoing modification, will act as a test platform for the entire Mk1A version production line.»
«The LCA Mk-1A is an indigenously designed aircraft with more than 70 percent domestic content. During further testing, the aircraft will be equipped with an active electronically scanning electronically scanning radar (AESA), an advanced short-range air-to-air missile (ASRAAM) which is a combat missile, an electronic warfare (EW) suite and an aerial refueling system, to meet the operational requirements of the IAF (Indian Air Force),» the source added.
Both the AESA radar (earlier it was reported that the Israeli Elta EL/M-2052 would be used) and the electronic warfare suite would be of Indian design and manufacture, with the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) being responsible for its development.
Another Indian company involved in the project is Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which is responsible for the development and supply of critical avionics systems, such as the LRU (Line Replaceable Unit) for the LCA Mk1A program.
It may be recalled that, in early 2021, the Government of India approved the purchase of 73 Tejas Mk.1A single-seat and 10 Mk1 two-seat trainer for approximately $6.24 billion. The engines for these aircraft have already been purchased from U.S. based company General Electric.

HAL officials estimate that they will have completed delivery of the 83 new Tejas between 2023 and 2024.
