Ampaire, a developer of electric and hybrid propulsion solutions for aviation, has signed a new memorandum of understanding with Tamarack Aerospace, a company focused on the performance and sustainability of aviation operations through the design of winglet modifications.

Under the agreement, both companies will work on implementing aerodynamic improvements to Ampaire’s family of hybrid electric aircraft. This includes the use of Performance SMARTWING winglets, developed by Tamarack, on the hybrid versions of the Cessna Caravan (Eco Caravan), Twin Otter (Eco Otter) and Beechcraft King Air (Eco King Air).

As reported by Ampaire in a press release, the joint work began with an analysis that validated the synergies between wingtip devices and hybrid propulsion technology. However, the Performance SMARTWING technology is also compatible with the original versions of each of the aircraft, as well as the Cessna Citation business jets.

Kevin Noertker, CEO of Ampaire, said: «Tamarack’s technology is a great match with Ampaire’s hybrid propulsion system, as both work synergistically to upgrade the performance and economics of the proven aircraft operated by our customers».

Tamarack developed a technology it called the «Active Winglet», which responds automatically and dynamically, and is autonomous from other systems. The device detects changing conditions that exert different levels of pressure on the structure through sensors. This allows it to optimise the efficiency, stability and overall performance of the aircraft.

Tamarak’s patented technology consists of a wingtip extension. The combination increases aerodynamic efficiency by three to four times compared to traditional devices. Performance SMARTWING operates by lightening the loads imposed by wind gusts or the aircraft’s own manoeuvres.

Under specific conditions, it can reduce drag and thus reduce fuel consumption at a given stage of the operation. Moreover, it can be installed without compromising the original design of the aircraft.
