On January 28, 2023, the final iteration of flybe announced it would no longer operate from that date on. The measure affected «about 2,500» customers on that Saturday and «75,000» in total, according to the BBC at the time, and an administrator was appointed to try and sell the business.
flybe was loss-making, burning between GBP4 and 5 million per month, according to a filing available in the Companies House, and as all of its fleet was leased, its only sizeable assets were its slots, particularly in Amsterdam and London/Heathrow Airport. The sale ultimately did not succeed, as the administrators announced some two weeks later.
Ultimately flybe had an uphill battle from the start. It had chosen some markets that were already crowded with competition (its two bases were Belfast/City and Birmingham).
