During May, 90,321 tourists entered Costa Rica by air, which set a record since the country completely reopened its borders to tourism in November 2020.
The information was released by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, which indicated that of that total, 72,328 passengers were from American origin, almost double than in January 2021 and around 73% compared to the levels of May 2019.
“The signs of recovery in the US market are very relevant and join the recent announcements of the return of all the airlines that connect our country with the US, together with the notable increase in the vaccination of its citizens, a situation that strengthens the confidence to travel to destinations like Costa Rica,” commented Gustavo J. Segura, Minister of Tourism of the Central American country.
To achieve these figures, the strengthening of connections with the United States was key. On June 6, the Southwest landing established the return of all airlines that operated prior to the pandemic. This company is joined by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country and United. In addition, Frontier will begin flying to Costa Rica on July 1.
The Costa Rican Tourism Institute launched a promotional video on social networks with the aim of maintaining Costa Rica’s position in the US market.
«The material is part of the Only the Essentials campaign and uses images of the country that invite tourists to get excited, to travel again, and re-visit Costa Rica if they already know it; all in accordance with the corresponding protocols and taking advantage that in the American population there is already a large group of people vaccinated, so they are more encouraged to travel. In the video, tourists are invited to carry out different activities with responsibility and hence the phrase «Let’s get excited again”,» they detailed from the ICS.
