The European ultra low cost bets on Spain and launches four new routes that will connect the Canary Islands with Austria, Italy and Romania.

Focused for the next winter season in the northern hemisphere, the company will connect Lanzarote (ACE) with Milan / Malpensa (MXP) and Rome / Fiumicino (FCO) in Italy; and from Gran Canaria (LPA) with Vienna (VIE) in Austria and Bucharest (OTP) in Romania.

With the opening of the new routes, Wizz Air further underlines its commitment to the Italian market which will contribute to the development of the local economy, aviation and tourism. On July 22, the ultra low cost announced that it would connect Gran Canarias (LPA) with Rome / Fiumicino and Milan / Malpensa, both of which will start on October 3.

«We believe that these new flights will strengthen the cultural and economic ties between Italy and Spain, offering passengers even more convenient air travel services,» commented Andras Rado, the company’s Senior Communications Manager.

Despite the recession in air travel as a result of the current pandemic, the company announced in the last twelve months more than 240 new links, the creation of several bases in Europe and a subsidiary in the Middle East. Unfortunately, several of the new connections did not last long enough and were suspended, visualizing that the demand for travel within Europe is still depressed.

“We are pleased to announce the expansion of our route network from Romanian airports to destinations in Spain. We look forward to welcoming the first passengers on these new routes,» added Paulina Gosk, Corporate Communications Manager of Wizz Air.

The ultra low cost announced five new links, of which four are to the Canary Islands.

The link with Rome does not have any competition, being that Vueling suspended it in February 2020. But, from Milan it will have to compete with Easyjet that operates twice a week with Airbus A320neo aircraft.

On the other hand, the link between Gran Canaria and Austria is operated by Ryanair with one weekly flight and Austrian Airlines with two weekly flights.

The flights between Bucharest and Gran Canarias is an unprecedented link, without another company having explored this market.
