Eurowings announces new base in Sweden

Eurowings continues to expand its operations with the opening of its new base at Stockholm-Arlanda. The German airline offers flights in Scandinavia and will initially station five Airbus A320 aircraft at Arlanda by March 2022. This will be Eurowings’ eleventh base of operations and the fifth outside Germany after Palma de Mallorca, Pristina, Salzburg and the previously announced Prague base.

The Lufthansa Group’s leisure airline will offer exciting direct connections from Scandinavia to business and holiday destinations throughout Europe. By increasing its presence in the Nordic countries, Eurowings will not only strengthen its presence in Sweden, but also in the main holiday destinations in Europe for Swedish customers. The creation of this new base at Arlanda Airport brings the creation of hundreds of jobs in the region.

Eurowings will start with 20 European destinations for the first time from March 27, 2022. The first published routes to and from Stockholm-Arlanda are as follows:

  • Malaga, Spain
  • Faro, Portugal
  • Nice, France
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Rome, Italy
  • Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Birmingham, United Kingdom
  • Gdansk, Poland
  • Pristina, Kosovo

New destinations are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, bookings are already available through the Eurowings website, ticket fares start from 29 euros.

Strong competition at Arlanda          

The air market from Stockholm’s main airport has intensified with the announcement of a new base for Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, and Finnair with the addition of long-haul flights, both competing with one of the largest airline operators at Arlanda, Scandinavian Airlines SAS.

Spain is one of Arlanda’s main international air markets, data obtained by Aviacionline through Aena Statistics indicate 2,137,131 passengers flew from Stockholm’s main airport to Spanish airports in 2019. Up to August 2021 it has recovered 20.39% compared to pre-pandemic levels of the market between Arlanda and Spain.

By December 2021, Ryanair will be the leading airline in the market between Arlanda and Spain counting with a supply in ASK (seats per kilometers offered) of 73.8%, the distribution among operators is as follows: SAS 19.1%, Norwegian Air Shuttle 4.1% and TUI fly Nordic 2.8%, according to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium.
