American Airlines inaugurates its 28th destination in Mexico

American Airlines inaugurated flights between Miami (MIA) and Chetumal (CTM), its 28th destination in Mexico, strengthening its leading role in the Aztec country. This is the only route to the United States from Chetumal.

The operations are carried out by its regional subsidiary American Eagle, and will have two weekly frequencies on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Embraer 175 aircraft with a configuration of 12 seats in business class and 64 in economy class.

“American Airlines has a history of nearly 80 years of service in Mexico and today we are proud to close this 2021 by inaugurating the flight from Miami to Chetumal,” said José María Giraldo, Chief Operating Officer for Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Ecuador at American Airlines.

“This first-ever flight in the state capital will benefit the entire southern region and expand its tourism industry, contributing to the economy and development of the region,” added Carlos Manuel Joaquin Gonzalez, Governor of Quintana Roo.

“This year American celebrates 40 years of service in the state of Quintana Roo, operating from Cancun, and today our service in Chetumal will offer better travel access to tourists who wish to visit the state capital, as well as the tourist destinations of Bacalar and various archaeological sites nearby,” continued Vicky Uzal, Commercial Director of American Airlines for Mexico.

American Airlines has been the main foreign airline in Mexico for several years.  Aviacionline data obtained through the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) indicate that in 2019 the company carried 4,911,612 passengers and more than 15,500 tons of cargo in 34,320 air operations.

Through the month of October, the Chetumal Airport has transported 22,473 passengers in 388 air operations, which reflects a recovery of 78.27% and 87%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2019.

American Airlines currently operates 750 weekly flights to 28 destinations in Mexico, from Miami (MIA) the airline offers service to Mexico City (MEX), Cancun (CUN), Merida (MID), Cozumel (CZM), and Chetumal (CTM).
