Rionegro Airport to close its runway for two weekends

Rionegro’s José María Córdova International Airport will close its runway for two weekends in February 2022.

The shutdown, which will be carried out to work on the runway and to improve operational conditions for aircraft, will last 36 hours each day at the following times:

First closing: Saturday, February 19 from 2 a. m. until Sunday, February 20 at 2 p. m. (36 hours).

Second closing: Saturday, February 26 from 2 a.m. to Sunday, February 27 at 2 p.m. (36 hours).

Fredy Jaramillo Giraldo, Airport Manager, explained that » From the Airplan S.A.S. maintenance program, periodic measurements are implemented to identify the condition of the pavement. On the basis of these results, actions to guarantee the maximum useful life and operational safety are taken. In this sense, after performing a series of predictive measurements, it was identified that the runway should be intervened in two of its zones, with the objective of restoring rolling conditions and offering a much longer remaining life».

The works, which will have a total execution time of 72 hours, were agreed with the airlines that operate in the terminal to minimize the impact on passengers and cargo transportation.

«We are aware of the inconvenience and discomfort that these works generate in all the public, therefore we reiterate that they are necessary to ensure the safety of all and, together with the airlines and the authorities, we searched for all viable alternatives that would have the least possible impact on the operation of the Airport», added Jaramillo Giraldo.

The airport, which serves the city of Medellín, currently connects with 12 international and 15 domestic destinations.
