The Argentine Air Navigation Company (Empresa Argentina de Navegación Aérea) completed the installation of three Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) at the airports of San Salvador de Jujuy, San Miguel de Tucumán and Salta, in northwestern Argentina.
This equipment consists of a series of high-precision surface meteorological sensors. Depending on the particular configuration adopted for each airport, the parameters measured and calculated are, among others: runway visual range; cloud height; visibility; wind direction and intensity; pressure; temperature; humidity; and solar radiation for calculating daytime operating hours. In addition, a Present Weather Sensor performs real-time measurements of precipitation, its intensity, visibility, and cause of its reduction, and distinguishes between different forms of precipitation (fog, mist, rain, freezing rain, drizzle, rain/snow mixture, and snow and hail, among others).
As a result, airports have a significant improvement in the quality of the meteorological information available in real-time at each airport, resulting in operational and safety improvements.
EANA had closed the purchase of AWOS equipment with the Finnish company Vaisala in March 2019 with a budget of 14.8 million euros to be installed in 31 Argentine airports.
