As part of its extensive Atlantic expansion, for the boreal summer season, United Airlines becomes the largest North American operator in Ireland, surpassing American Airlines which was the largest carrier in 2019.
United will offer five daily flights and offer more destinations in Ireland than any other airline in the U.S. and Canada. Data obtained by Aviacionline via Cirium the Chicago-based airline will offer an average of more than 300 flights and 59,000 flights per month in Irish territory.
Dublin (DUB) is the fifth most important European destination in the United States, in 2019 3,379,619 passengers were mobilized from the Irish capital to the North American country. United has operated in Ireland since 1998 and will offer service from its three main transatlantic hubs to Newark (EWR), Chicago O’ Hare (ORD), and Washington Dulles (IAD).
United’s Irish schedule for the summer season
Newark (EWR) – Dublin (DUB)
This route is United’s only year-round service to Ireland and the company’s most important service. Beginning April 23, the company will offer two daily flights that will be operated by Boeing 777-200ER (B77E) aircraft with 276 seats in three classes with Polaris cabins and Boeing 757-200 (B752) aircraft with 169 seats in two classes, the schedule is as follows:
- Flight UA23 EWR 19:30 – DUB 07:05+1 B77E
- Flight UA22 DUB 09:20 – EWR 11:35 B77E
- Flight UA317 EWR 22:10 – DUB 10:00+1 B752
- Flight UA316 DUB 11:50 – EWR 14:40 B752
In 2019 between Newark and Dublin, 372,913 passengers were flown between United and Aer Lingus. It was the fourth busiest route from the Irish capital to the United States.
Chicago O’Hare (ORD) – Dublin (DUB)
One of the largest O&D traffic routes between Ireland and the United States, United as of March 27 resumes this seasonal service after 2 years with a daily Boeing 757-200 flight operation, the schedule is as follows:
- Flight UA980 ORD 21:10 – DUB 10:45+1
- Flight UA981 DUB 12:15 – ORD 14:50
In 2019 between Chicago and Dublin, 487,147 passengers were flown between United, American Airlines, and Aer Lingus. It was the second busiest route from the Irish capital to the United States.
Washington Dulles (IAD) – Dublin (DUB)
United continues to rebuild its transatlantic network from the U.S. capital, resuming seasonal service to the Irish capital on February 12 with a daily Boeing 757-200 operation, the schedule is as follows:
- Flight UA126 IAD 22:05 – DUB 10:05+1
- Flight UA127 DUB 12:55 – IAD 16:05
It was 2019 between Washington DC and Dublin moved 227,234 passengers between United and Aer Lingus. It is the sixth busiest route from the Irish capital to the United States.

Newark (EWR) – Shannon (SNN)
For the northern summer season, United will be the only U.S. carrier at Shannon (SNN), after American Airlines canceled the route due to 787 delivery problems and Delta decided not to restore its service from New York (JFK).
The Chicago-based airline will reinstate its service to Shannon (SNN) starting March 27 with a daily Boeing 757-200 flight operation, the service will be available through the end of October, the schedule is as follows:
- Flight UA976 EWR 22:50 – SNN 10:05+1
- Flight UA977 SNN 12:30 – EWR 14:50
In 2019 between Newark and Shannon, 68,655 passengers were flown with United as the sole operator. It was Shannon’s third busiest transatlantic route (SNN).
«This United Airlines service provides important onward connections into Newark, which is a major attraction at Shannon from both an inbound and outbound perspective. Over the past 22 years, this service has carried more than 2.1 million passengers to Shannon. This demonstrates the importance of this route from both a commercial and tourism standpoint» said Mary Considine, Shannon Group CEO.
Passenger statistics were obtained by Aviacionline from the U.S. Department of Transport (DOT) and Central Statistics Office (CSO) of Ireland.
