For the northern summer season, WestJet is introducing a new service to the United States and the re-establishment of its European network from Toronto (YYZ). This marks a new milestone for the company as demand for post-pandemic travel recovers.
New service to the United States
Starting May 19, WestJet is launching a new route between Toronto Pearson (YYZ) – Chicago O’ Hare (ORD) with daily flights, which will be operated through its regional subsidiary WestJet Encore.
In 2019, this route moved 1,005,811 passengers, making it one of the leading cross-border connections between the United States and Canada.
«We are delighted to offer daily nonstop service between Toronto and Chicago, two dynamic global cities,» said John Weatherill, WestJet’s Chief Commercial Officer.
«Our new cross-border route offers guests more options to discover these two vibrant cities or connect seamlessly to their destination of choice across our extensive network» added Weatherill.
European network reinstatement
This summer, WestJet is restoring its entire pre-pandemic transatlantic network, resuming all of its Spain, Ireland, and U.K. services, several of the European routes will have an increased seat offering over 2019.
«These routes create a significant flow of visitors from Europe and demonstrate WestJet’s commitment to leading the recovery of the travel and tourism industry» continued Weatherill.
European route schedule from Toronto – Pearson (YYZ).
- Barcelona (BCN) restarts from May 13 with a frequency of three times a week in Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This route in 2019 mobilized 191,273 passengers, the company will compete with Air Canada and Air Transat on this service.
- Dublin (DUB) restarts from May 13 with daily flights on Boeing 737 MAX 8. This route in 2019 mobilized 359,401, the company will compete with Aer Lingus, Air Canada, and Air Transat in this service.
- Glasgow (GLA) restarts from May 20 with a frequency of four times a week on Boeing 737 MAX 8. This route in 2019 mobilized 103,953 passengers, the company will compete with Air Transat on this service.
- Edinburgh (EDI) restarts from June 2 with a frequency of three times a week on Boeing 737 MAX 8. This route in 2019 mobilized 32,396 passengers, the company will compete with Air Canada on this service.
- London Gatwick (LGW) restarts from May 1 with daily flights and from June 11 increases with a frequency of nine times per week, all operations will be carried out in Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. En route in 2019 mobilized 436,800 passengers, the company will compete with Air Transat in this service.
Passenger data was obtained by Aviacionline through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT), Aena Statistics, Central Statistics Office (CSI), and Civil Authority Aviation UK (CAA).
