On the occasion of International Earth Day, Iberia presented its corporate Offset Programme. According to the Spanish airline, the initiative will allow companies to «travel more responsibly» and offset the emissions of their journeys with the Iberia Group through two ecosystem conservation projects in Guatemala and Peru.
In this way, Iberia becomes the first company of the International Airlines Group (IAG) to offer a program of this kind. Through CHOOOSE, a company that develops digital tools for environmental actions, corporate customers will have access to a platform with monthly reports of their carbon footprint and the possibility of offsetting it through certified projects.
The initiative is part of Iberia’s strategy to advance in the decarbonization of its operations. The company highlights four areas of work to reduce its emissions: the ecological transition of the industry, the creation of more sustainable passenger services, the continuous training and participation of its employees in environmental actions, and its commitment to society as an airline.
Sustainability Report 2021
For the 26th time, Iberia presented its annual Sustainability Report, which it has been producing since 1994. In the document, the company highlighted the work carried out by Iberia Airport Services, its handling division. Last year, it said, electric vehicles were introduced and many of its processes were digitized.
In April, IAG became the first European airline holding company to commit to operating 10% of its flights on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.
In November, Iberia completed the first flight powered by biofuel produced in Spain from waste. The operation between Madrid-Barajas (MAD) and Bilbao (BIO) was carried out in conjunction with Repsol. According to the information provided, both companies will soon carry out the first long-range flight using this type of fuel.
In the same month, IAG agreed with sustainable fuels company Velocys to purchase some 220,000 tonnes of SAF over the next ten years.
