On May 6, United resumed operations from Chicago O’ Hare (ORD) to Italy with the resumption of service from Rome – Fiumicino (FCO) and a new, unprecedented service to Milan – Malpensa (ORD) offering 6,804 seats per week as both routes will have daily flights.

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Ente Nazionale Per L’Aviazone Civile (ENAC) in 2019 between Rome and Chicago moved 211,772 passengers, it was the third main U.S. route from Fiumicino Airport (FCO).

All flights will be operated in a 243-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner configured as follows: 28 Polaris Business Class, 21 Premium Plus, 36 Economy Plus and 158 Economy.
According to data compiled by Aviacionline through The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), Illinois is home to 744,274 residents of Italian descent, and United will be the leading carrier to offer more flights between Chicago and Italy this summer season.
Largest Italy expansion in company history
Prior to the pandemic, United has steadily expanded its operations in Italy, data obtained by ENAC, in 2019 the Chicago-based company mobilized 599,088 passengers, with a growth of 20.8% over the previous year and was the third largest North American operator in Italian territory.
For the 2022 boreal summer season, United will be the second largest U.S. carrier with the most capacity to Italy with an offering of 28,184 seats per week on 108 air operations, representing a more than 40% increase in capacity over pre-pandemic levels.
Last week, the Chicago-based carrier resumed seasonal service from Newark (EWR) to Venice (VCE) and Naples (NAP), the latter of which United offers the only transatlantic flight from that airport, both routes had not operated since October 2019.
Effective May 27, United is adding a second frequency to service between Newark (EWR) and Rome – Fiumicino (FCO) operated on 276-seat Boeing 777-200ERs.
