Star Alliance member Copa Airlines conducted a commercial demonstration flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on June 7.

Flight CM303 to Panama (PTY) was part of an aviation industry initiative, organized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Boeing, to use SAF on selected flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This initiative reaffirms the aviation industry and Copa Airlines’ commitment to sustainability and the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

Supplied by World Energy, Copa purchased 39,000 pounds of SAF for flight CM303 on June 7, 2022, operated by a Boeing 737-MAX9 on the Los Angeles (LAX) – Panama (PTY) route. This initiative, which was carried out in conjunction with seven other airlines within the framework of the IX Summit of the Americas, is reflected in a reduction of 472,500 pounds of CO2 emissions.

The flight takes place within the framework of several meetings held by the commercial aviation industry, with the participation of Copa and other airlines, to define strategies that contribute to the goal of achieving zero net emissions in commercial aviation by 2050.

Achieving the ambitious goal of zero net emissions by 2050 will require the industry as a whole, including governments, regulators, manufacturers, and suppliers, to ensure the supply and availability of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), the efficient use of airspace and investment in new aviation technologies, among others.

Copa Airlines continues to implement initiatives aimed at efficient flight operations and fuel use, efficient waste management, replacement of single-use plastic products, among others, to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment.
