Lufthansa now allows carbon footprint offsetting directly on board

Lufthansa has launched a new carbon offsetting service. The German airline now allows this option to be selected directly on board and during any flight with an internet connection.

After successful testing of the service, Lufthansa is now offering it on a permanent basis. Passengers can contribute a sum of money to offset their carbon footprint from their personal devices and using the aircraft’s connectivity free of charge.

In addition, the system offers new alternatives with immediate effect. Each customer can choose one of the available offsetting options. The money can be used for initiatives to develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from biogenic waste or to support carbon offset projects of the organisation myclimate. Passengers can also opt for a combination of both.

Moreover, the new system allows each person on board to have access to information about the number of users who have already opted to contribute to the offsetting mechanism on that day.

Based on its on-board availability, Lufthansa offers the possibility to offset the carbon footprint throughout all stages of the journey. Currently, the company offers «green fare» options in the booking process, contribution alternatives at any time prior to the flight and the possibility to select the service even while the flight is in progress.
