Lufthansa considering reactivating more Airbus A380s

Lufthansa is considering reactivating its entire fleet of eight Airbus A380s that are stored at Teruel Airport (TEV) and could be included in the cabin refurbishment program, aero.de reports.

Recently, the company reactivated the first superjumbo registered with the registration “D-AIMK” and christened “Dusseldorf” for maintenance in Frankfurt and then at the Lufthansa Technik facility in Manila, these aircraft will be based at its hub in Munich (MUC), the company has planned the reactivation of three other units to be incorporated for its summer season 2023 schedule.

The airline still has drawbacks regarding plans to add more Airbus A380s to its fleet. In addition, deliveries of the Boeing 777-9 remain with an uncertain future and the retirement of the Boeing 747-400 fleet also plays a key role in reactivating more superjumbos.

Lufthansa returned six of its 14 A380s to Airbus, leaving in the fleet only eight units that remained in storage at Teruel Airport (TEV), Spain, for the past two years.

New cabins for Airbus A380s

According to information from aero.de Lufthansa no longer sees the reactivation of the Airbus A380s as a temporary solution and expects to keep them longer, the company expects to equip the superjumbos with the new “Allegris” products, which will be incorporated into the intercontinental fleet between 2023 and 2035.

Lufthansa still has a low profile on the Airbus A380s. The first superjumbo will enter service by next summer with the current cabin product.
