Lufthansa rescues more A340-600s from the desert

Lufthansa will reactivate another five Airbus A340-600s that were stored at Teruel Airport (TEV) for the northern summer season, according to the German media Aero Telegraph. Recently, the German company announced the return of the Airbus A380s, due to the increase in passenger traffic.

The return of the A340-600s stems from strong premium demand from both the corporate sector and leisure travelers. In 2022, the airline reactivated five of these aircraft for its Munich (MUC) hub to offer its First Class product again from the Bavarian capital, Lufthansa flew these models to its most popular destinations in the United States.

This model will be based at the company’s main hub in Frankfurt (FRA), although the airline has not made official which routes it will operate with these aircraft, according to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, Lufthansa has scheduled to fly with the Airbus A340-600 to New York (JFK), Bogota (BOG) and Hong Kong (HKG). From Munich (MUC) it will continue to operate services to North America.

The company will have a fleet of ten Airbus A340-600s with an average age of 15 years and are registered with the following registration numbers: D-AIHF, D-AIHI, D-AIHP, D-AIHT, D-AIHU, D-AIHV, D-AIHW, D-AIHX, D-AIHY, D-AIHZ. These aircraft have a configuration of 8 seats in First Class, 56-44 in Business Class, 28-32 in Premium Economy and 189-213 in Economy.

With the return of these units, Lufthansa Group will once again be the leading operator of Airbus A340s. In addition, for the summer season, the airline will have three aircraft with the First Class product which are the Boeing 747-8i, Airbus A380 and Airbus A340-600, by the end of this year it will receive new Airbus A350-900 with First Class.
