All Nippon Airways (ANA) reported its financial results for the fiscal year ending in March, marking its departure from the red for the first time in three years by obtaining a net profit of 89.4 billion yen (~ USD 669 million), even exceeding forecasts. The previous year, losses had been -142 billion yen.
This was driven by the relaxation of health border controls by the Japanese government.
Operating revenues grew by 67.3%, reaching ~ USD 12.8 billion, while operating expenses increased by only 35%, totaling ~ USD 11.8 billion.
In fiscal year 2022, All Nippon Airways carried 4.12 million international passengers, a figure four times higher than in 2021 but still 60% lower than in 2019, prior to the outbreak of the pandemic (although recovery had already reached 55% by the fourth quarter). Capacity, measured in available seat kilometers (ASK), grew by 74.8%, while demand (RPK) increased by 410%, resulting in a load factor of 73.6% (46 percentage points higher than in 2021).
In the domestic segment, ANA carried 34.5 million passengers (+92.3% vs 2021 and -28% vs 2019). Capacity (ASK) grew by 45.5%, while demand (RPK) increased by 96.6%, resulting in a load factor of 65.5% (+16.8 pp).
Its low-cost subsidiary Peach Aviation carried 7.8 million passengers (+82.2%), with capacity growing by 55.6% and demand increasing by 85.5%, resulting in a load factor of 73.5% (+12 pp).
Regarding cargo (both pure and belly cargo), capacity in available ton-kilometers decreased by 5.2%, while demand fell by -20%. The load factor dropped 12 percentage points to 63%.
For 2023, ANA estimates that its operating revenues will grow by 15%, although net profit would -10%. International capacity would grow by 48.1% (still 23% below 2019) and domestic capacity would increase by 10.9% (-6.8% vs 2019). International cargo capacity would grow by 4% (-5.7% vs 2019) and domestic cargo capacity by 18.3% (-4.2% vs 2019).
ANA’s fleet at the end of fiscal year 2022 consisted of 236 aircraft: 3 A380s, 18 B777-300s, 10 B777-200s, 2 B777Fs, 3 B787-10s, 40 B787-9s, 36 B787-8s, 15 B767-300s, 9 B767Fs, 22 A321neos, 4 A321ceos, 11 A320neos, 39 B737-800s, and 27 Dash 8-400s. Peach Aviation operates 3 A321neos, 10 A320neos, and 27 A320s.
