«By extending our network in Calgary, we aim to alleviate the burden of excessive airfare costs for Albertans. Our presence in Calgary equates to more affordable fares, more options for Canadian travelers, and a boost to the regional economy,» remarked Stephen Jones, President and CEO of Flair Airlines.
The inauguration of the Calgary base showcases Flair’s significant investment in resources and workforce, symbolizing its sustained growth in Canada grounded in its low-cost model. By July 2023, the base, housing three Boeing 737s, a maintenance facility, and a hangar, is expected to create nearly 150 jobs for pilots, cabin crew, and ground staff.
Deputy Mayor of Calgary, Courtney Walcott, asserted: «This expansion cements Calgary’s status as an accessible city. The establishment of a new Flair Airlines base in YYC will allow more Calgarians to travel and spend money at their destinations rather than on their journey.»
Flair’s operations have generated significant economic impact on Canadian communities, with the airline estimated to have created 5,800 jobs and pumped over $890 million in revenue across Canadian regions by 2022. The company claims its affordable fares saved Canadians $256 million in 2022.
In 2023, Flair’s seat capacity at Calgary (YYC) saw a 46% hike compared to the previous year, with an expanded network of 15 routes. The newly added services include:
- London, Ontario (YXU)
- Las Vegas (LAS)
- Phoenix – Sky Harbor (PHX)
- Puerto Vallarta (PVR)
Bob Sartor, President and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, affirmed, «This decision underscores the robustness of the Calgary market. We are committed to bolstering our partners’ growth and functioning as a crucial economic catalyst for the city, the region, and the aviation industry.»
