Air Inuit announced that it has finalized the acquisition of three Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which will be added to its fleet to enhance its passenger and cargo service for the residents of Nunavik. The aircraft will be customized with Air Inuit’s «combi» configuration. This allows for the safe and comfortable transportation of passengers along with cargo on the main deck.

«The addition of these aircraft to our fleet enhances our capacity to efficiently transport passengers and deliver essential cargo to the communities we serve,» said Christian Busch, President and CEO of Air Inuit. «Acquiring these aircraft also brings us closer to our goal of reducing carbon emissions to combat climate change.»

These 737-800 aircraft are replacing the old and venerable Boeing 737-200 aircraft currently in service with Air Inuit. Thanks to this, the company expects to reduce its fuel consumption by nearly 40 percent. The three aircraft will be equipped with main deck cargo doors to meet the requirements at the operating hubs in Nunavik.

This addition to Air Inuit’s fleet marks a milestone for the airline, which was founded in 1978. «We are proud to provide this vital service, celebrating 45 years of operation in 2023. Once again, Air Inuit demonstrates leadership as it grows and adapts to the changing needs of the communities it serves,» stated Noah Tayara, Executive Chairman of Air Inuit.

«The modernization of Air Inuit’s fleet is part of a broader initiative to fulfill its mission as an instrument of economic and social development for the Inuit of Nunavik,» said Pita Aatami, President of Makivik Corporation. «This is made possible through significant investments by the Inuit community of Nunavik.»

The introduction of the three new aircraft will take place gradually over the next 24 months. This modernization and growth project will also require significant government investments to improve the airstrips in Nunavik.
