The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has reaffirmed its trust in Airbus by awarding a 7.5-year contract renewal for the in-service support of the Luftwaffe’s A400M aircraft fleet. This extension expands upon the initial contract set in place in December 2014.

Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Military Air Systems of Airbus Defence and Space, welcomed the contract as a testament to the enduring commitment between the German government and Airbus. “The A400M has become an indispensable asset in Germany’s air force inventory,” Dumont said. “This contract allows us to deepen our fruitful cooperation and represents a successful partnership model between industry and customers.”

The extended contract ensures that the industrial technical support of the German Air Force’s A400M fleet continues seamlessly. This support encompasses a broad spectrum of services provided by Airbus Support Centre located at Wunstorf Air Base and the central Centres of Competence in Getafe, Spain.

In addition to maintaining its Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services from Manching near Munich, Wunstorf Air Base near Hannover and Hannover Airport, Airbus plans to establish a new A400M maintenance facility near Wunstorf Air Base.

The new maintenance hub, due to commence operations in 2027, will host the Airbus A400M Support Centre, featuring a total workforce of approximately 300 staff. These teams will collaborate closely with suppliers and customer representatives to ensure top-tier service. Construction work for the facility will start immediately.

Germany remains the largest customer of the A400M, with the Luftwaffe currently operating 40 A400M out of a total of 53 aircraft on order. These aircraft operate out of Wunstorf Air Base, home to the Air Transport Wing 62 (Lufttransportgeschwader 62).
