As part of its transatlantic expansion for the 2024 summer season, Delta Air Lines will resume service between New York (JFK) and Shannon. The airline last operated on the route on September 30, 2019.
This will also mark the return of its Boeing 757s on flights to the British Isles and add a fourth transatlantic route, as it currently only deploys them from Detroit, Minneapolis and New York-JFK to Keflavik, Iceland. As of September this year only 2% of Delta’s transatlantic flights are with 757s, when in 2019 the figure was as high as 8% according to data obtained by Aviacionline via Cirium.
The new service will provide about 2,700 seats per week between New York and Shannon. By next summer, Delta will be offering two destinations in Ireland, in addition to new routes, complementing the new connection between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Dublin.
«We are delighted with the reestablishment of Delta New York/JFK service. We have worked closely with the airline to achieve this. The additional daily service to this important gateway from JFK will further boost connectivity to the U.S., helping our customers reach global export markets, attract foreign direct investment and draw international visitors to the west of Ireland, all of which help drive economic activity,» said Mary Considine, CEO of Shannon Airport Group.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Central Statistics Office of Ireland, 134,022 passengers were moved in 2019 between New York (JFK) and Shannon. Delta will compete on this route with Aer Lingus’ daily service operated on Airbus A321LRs and will be the second U.S. carrier to offer nonstop flights to Shannon.
