At 8:32 this Monday, the first flight of the season from American Airlines landed at Carrasco Airport, serving Montevideo. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 registration N882BL, took off from Miami International Airport at 23:11 the previous day.
American Airlines will operate three weekly flights between Miami and Montevideo, but during the peak holiday season, between December 20 and January 7, it will increase the frequency to a daily flight.
American Airlines Flight 989 will depart from Miami on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, arriving in Montevideo at 10:00 the next day. The return, as AA984, will be on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, taking off from Carrasco Airport at 22:00 and landing in Miami at 5:05 the next day.
The route between Miami and Montevideo is operated with Boeing 787-8 aircraft with a capacity for 20 passengers in Business, 28 in Premium Economy, and 186 in Economy.
Following the pandemic, American Airlines only returns to Montevideo during the IATA winter season (which corresponds to summer in the southern hemisphere). On this occasion, the last scheduled flight from Miami will be on March 29, 2024, with a return from the Uruguayan capital on March 30.
When American Airlines stops operating to Montevideo, it markets the destination through its agreement with GOL, channeling passengers through São Paulo/Guarulhos. Alternatively, the Uruguayan market remains connected with the United States via other hubs such as Copa Airlines in Panama, Avianca in Bogotá, LATAM in Lima, São Paulo, and Santiago, or Aerolíneas Argentinas in Ezeiza.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline from the Cirium platform, in November, the seat offering at the Carrasco airport will be 0.8% above the levels of the same month in 2019, before the outbreak of the pandemic, with 193,326 seats.
