Saab received an additional order from the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) to ensure the continued operation and enhancement of the Gripen C/D’s capabilities. The order is valued at SEK 579 million (+USD52 million).
The additional order includes the design of new development and simulation environments for the Gripen C/D fighter aircraft, as well as the development of new support systems that will facilitate harmonization between the Swedish Gripen C/D and Gripen E models. The order also includes complementary orders for equipment and hardware.
“The upgrade of Gripen C/D is an important step in maintaining a high level of operational capability in the turbulent world we live in. It is also important in order for Gripen C/D to operate beyond 2030,” says Lars Tossman, head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area.
This order is the implementation of one of the options included in a broader modernization contract signed in December 2022 between FMV and Saab.
Sweden acquired 60 units of the Gripen E, which will not replace the previous C and D models, but will operate together for many years, so their correct interoperability is fundamental for the Swedish Air Force, which has not yet defined a fifth or sixth generation successor for them.
