At the Dubai Airshow, Ethiopian Airlines has sealed a deal with Boeing for up to 67 jets, including 11 787 Dreamliners and 20 737 MAX airplanes, with an option for 36 additional aircraft. This agreement represents the largest-ever Boeing airplane purchase by an African carrier, signifying a major step in Ethiopian Airlines’ strategic growth and fleet modernization plan.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, highlighted the deal’s alignment with the airline’s Vision 2035 Strategy. «This order will enable us to modernize and increase our fleet in support of Ethiopian Airlines’ growth plan and our Vision 2035 Strategy,» he said. The acquisition of these technologically advanced aircraft underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to environmentally conscious travel and superior passenger experiences.

The order comprises the 787-9 Dreamliner, known for its 25% reduction in fuel use and emissions compared to its predecessors, and the 737-8 model, which offers a 20% improvement in fuel efficiency and a 50% smaller noise footprint. Both aircraft models are celebrated for their environmental benefits and enhanced passenger comfort.

Additionally, Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing will collaborate on cabin modification services for the carrier’s existing 787 Dreamliners, including advanced in-flight entertainment and new seating in all classes.

Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, Brad McMullen, acknowledged Ethiopian Airlines as a key player in African aviation. «With their decades of experience operating our single-aisle and widebody jets, we appreciate Ethiopian Airlines’ confidence in our products,» he stated.

It’s important to note the historical context of this deal, particularly regarding the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash in March 2019, involving a Boeing 737 MAX. This event led to the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX fleet, raised significant safety concerns.

Since then, Boeing has implemented comprehensive updates and rigorous testing to ensure the safety of the 737 MAX series. The current order signifies renewed confidence in the improved safety measures of the 737 MAX, and Ethiopian’s commitment is a sign that the crisis is over, despite victim families’ claims are still ongoing.

This deal positions Ethiopian Airlines to expand its global reach. The 787-9 can carry 296 passengers for up to 14,010 km, while the 737-8 accommodates up to 210 passengers with a range of up to 6,480 km.
