Ryanair has launched a record schedule in Calabria for the summer of 2024, which includes the opening of a new base in Reggio Calabria and 10 new routes in the 3 Calabrian airports: Lamezia, Crotone, and Reggio.
This expansion in Calabria marks the beginning of a long-term growth strategy agreed with President Occhiuto to position the Italian city as a leading destination in Europe, increasing inbound tourism and connectivity throughout the region.
The establishment of the new base will reinforce Ryanair’s presence in the Calabrian region and create up to 200 new jobs, along with a significant investment of $100 million in new aircraft.
In addition, Ryanair continues to develop connectivity at its Lamezia base with a new route to Valencia. In Crotone, the low-cost carrier will add a new route to Turin. With these new routes, connectivity growth will reach 13% and 33% in Lamezia and Crotone, respectively.
The CEO of Ryanair, Eddie Wilson, stated, «As the #1 airline in Europe and Italy, Ryanair is pleased to announce this significant investment in Calabria with the opening of a new base ($100 million investment) in Reggio Calabria and 10 new routes for summer ’24.»
«Overall, Ryanair will record a capacity growth of over 20% spread across the 3 Calabrian airports (Lamezia, Crotone, and Reggio). This significant expansion marks the beginning of a long-term strategy with President Occhiuto and the Region to position Calabria as a leading destination in Europe, fostering inbound tourism, connectivity, and employment, while offering low fares to citizens/visitors,» he added.
The President of the Calabria Region, Roberto Occhiuto, noted that «this is a truly important day for Calabria. Having such strong interest from Ryanair, the leading airline in Europe, is a source of great pride for us, but it also represents a new and exciting challenge.»
«I thank both the Group CEO and CEO Eddie Wilson, here in Reggio Calabria today, and the entire Ryanair team for the commitment they have decided to make. My government is informing national and international partners about the extraordinary opportunities our region offers. As governor, I feel like a manager of Calabria, who must present its ‘product’ in the best possible way, highlighting its undeniable qualities. The goal is to attract investments and tourists,» he added.
