Alaska Airlines will have a new non-stop service between San Diego and Washington-National, the only airline to offer this route. This week, the United States Department of Transportation (DoT) granted approval for the airline’s request under the 2024 Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act.

«We are pleased that the DOT recognizes the value of Alaska providing direct service between San Diego and DCA, and we appreciate the numerous leaders, local businesses, and organizations that supported our proposal. This new route reflects our commitment to San Diego, home to the largest military community in the country, and offers our guests a seamless travel option to our nation’s capital,» said Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Airlines.

Since 2011, Alaska Airlines has operated flights to Washington-National, and currently offers non-stop services from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, providing more than 5,500 weekly seats.

Alaska Airlines is the airline with the most non-stop destinations from San Diego, offering a total of 40 and more than 70 daily flights. In collaboration with its global partners, the airline provides connections to more than 330 destinations with a single stop in San Diego. Currently, San Diego is the most in-demand destination from Washington-National without non-stop service.

«We are thrilled that Alaska Airlines has received approval to start non-stop service between San Diego International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. San Diego has been the largest origin-destination market without service to Reagan National Airport, with significant defense, biotechnology, and communications technology sectors that require efficient access to the heart of the national capital region,» said Kimberly J. Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
