During the Tianguis Turístico 2021 event held in Yucatán, three airlines announced that they will open new routes to increase connectivity in the Mundo Maya area among Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.
The companies were represented by Richard Callaway Ayau, CEO of ARM Aviación; Juan Ignacio Rosello, Commercial Director of Aeromar; and Ricardo Sagastume, General Manager of G Airways.
«With the combined will of tour operators and airlines, a very important step has been taken to reactivate connectivity in the Mayan World. With Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, today we announce new routes and frequencies from Cancun to Flores airport, starting with 3 weekly flights with the goal of having a daily flight,» said Miguel Corruco Marques, Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico.
The first phase of this interregional connection will consist of the following routes: Guatemala City (GUA) – Flores (FRS) and Guatemala City (GUA) – San Pedro Sula (SAP), which will have an operation of three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Aeromar plans to fly Cancun – Flores (FRS) with three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays in ATR aircraft.
During the meeting, it was announced that the Ministry of Tourism is interested in inviting Guatemala City to be part of the Magical Towns, one of Sectur’s most successful programs, and a twinning agreement is expected to be signed.
The air market between Mexico and Guatemala has almost recovered to a pre-pandemic level. Five airlines already operate between the two countries: Aeromexico, Volaris, Volaris Costa Rica, TAG Airlines, and shortly after Aeromar being the next one.
