Last January 4, American Airlines resumed operations between Los Angeles and Sydney (SYD), after having suspended passenger flights on the route in August 2021, due to Australian government travel restrictions.
American’s flights to the major Australian city are currently operated on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, replacing 777-300ERs. While the service began on a daily basis, it will be reduced to three per week due to delivery problems with the Dreamliners.
Flight Schedule
- Los Angeles – Sydney Flight AA73 LAX 22:50 – SYD 09:00+1
- Sydney – Los Angeles Flight AA72 SYD 11:15 – LAX 06:05
The return to Sydney (SYD) means a recovery of American Airlines’ transpacific and long-haul network at Los Angeles (LAX) after canceling several routes to mainland China, Hong Kong, and South America.
Qantas, its joint venture partner, and Oneworld restarted operations from Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne (MEL) to Los Angeles (LAX) in November last year and expects to resume flights from Brisbane (BNE) soon.
American Airlines expects to re-establish its Pacific network during 2022. After returning to Australia, the company is now waiting for New Zealand to open its borders so it can resume flights to Auckland from Los Angeles (LAX) and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and to Christchurch (CHC) from Los Angeles (LAX).
