The Dominican Republic Civil Aviation Board (JAC) has approved new routes between Santo Domingo (SDQ) and Punta Cana (PUJ) with Medellin – Rionegro (MDE). Routes to be operated by Wingo and VIVA airlines.
Wingo, the Colombian low cost subsidiary of Copa Airlines has scheduled between March and July to increase operations on three routes between Colombia and the Dominican Republic. This is in addition to a new service.
The JAC approved Wingo’s scheduled and cargo flight permits for the Medellin (MDE) – Santo Domingo (SDQ) route with a twice-weekly frequency (Mondays and Thursdays) in Boeing 737-800 NG. With this start of operations, the company plans to offer 135,780 seats in its first year of operation.
The company also plans to increase operations on the Bogota (BOG) – Santo Domingo (SDQ) route from 4 to 5 flights per week as of March 31. Afterward from July 1, it will increase service to 6 flights per week. Data obtained by Aviacionline through JAC Statistics in 2021 this route mobilized 83,347 passengers.
Plans for the northern summer season
For the northern summer season, the route Medellin (MDE) – Punta Cana (PUJ) from July 1 increases from 3 to 4 weekly flights. The company will continue with the same schedule on the route Bogota (BOG) – Punta Cana (PUJ). All increases made by the company on its routes to the Dominican Republic are permanent.
Wingo mobilized 115,335 passengers in 774 air operations between Colombia and the Dominican Republic in 2021. Data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium the company plans to offer between both nations an offer of more than 23,000 seats and more than 140 flights on four routes by the summer of 2022.
«The increase in these frequencies is the result of the vision of relaunching air-commercial relations in the region of the Government presided by Luis Abinader. We are sure that this increase in the supply of routes to and from our country will be of great benefit to tourism and commerce» said José Marte Piatini, president of the JAC.
VIVA’s application to operate between Medellín (MDE) – Punta Cana (PUJ) was also approved. The company will have a frequency of four times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday). Operations to be carried in Airbus A320ceo/A320neo aircraft with 188 seats. In its first year of operation, the airline is expected to serve 50,500 passengers.
