Eurowings, the regional leisure airline of the Lufthansa Group, opened a base in Stockholm/Arlanda (ARN), Sweden, its first base in Northern Europe.

The first flight took off shortly after 14:00 on March 26 for Barcelona. With the opening of its new base, the German airline is significantly expanding its services in Northern Europe.

Stockholm is Eurowings’ eleventh location in Europe and fifth base outside the German domestic market, after Palma de Mallorca in Spain, Prague in the Czech Republic, Pristina in Kosovo, and Salzburg in Austria.

The move also brings hundreds of new jobs to the region (both direct and indirect), creating an employment boost for the Scandinavian aviation market.

«Sweden is a market that fits perfectly with our orientation as a value airline for Europe.» Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings, exclaimed.

«In times of uncertainty, many travelers are no longer primarily looking for the cheapest ticket, but for an airline, they can trust unconditionally in terms of safety, reliability, and social responsibility,» he concluded.

The routes it will operate from Stockholm/Arlanda target several popular tourist destinations in Southern Europe such as Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Alicante (ALC) and Malaga (AGP) in Spain; the Greek islands of Heraklion (HER), Rhodes (RHO) and Mykonos (JMK), as well as Larnaca (LCA) in Cyprus.

Other destinations to be served include Birmingham (BHX) in the UK; Prague (PRG) in the Czech Republic; Rome/Fiumicino (FCO) in Italy; Nice (NCE) in France; Berlin (BER), Cologne/Bonn (GCN), Hamburg (HAM) and Düsseldorf (DUS) in Germany.

Arlanda, the most sought-after new base

Eurowings’ foray into Arlanda revitalized the increased operations of other carriers. Ryanair moved several destinations from its Skavsta base to Arlanda following the German low-cost carrier’s announcement.

In the same vein, Norwegian reopened its Stockholm base with 50 intra-European routes, positioning itself as the airport’s leading low-cost carrier.
