Milan – Malpensa reinforces its flights to North America for the summer season

Milan – Malpensa (MXP), Italy’s second busiest airport, will receive new flights from North America for the upcoming northern summer season. At the same time, several services suspended since March 2020 will be resumed.

In 2019, according to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Ente Nazionale per L’Aviazione Civile (ENAC), 1,525,270 passengers flew between North America and Milan (MXP), Malpensa Airport’s second largest long-haul market, second only to the Middle East region.

During the summer, the market between Milan and New York will see 47 weekly flights and an offer of more than 110,000 seats served by 7 airlines. Starting April 15, boutique airline La Compagnie will begin its first intercontinental operations from Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Newark (EWR) with five weekly flights on 76-seat Airbus A321LR Business Class aircraft.

On April 2, ITA Airways inaugurated flights between Milan (MXP) and New York (JFK). In addition, Delta Airlines will introduce a second frequency on this route in May.

Data compiled by ENAC prior to the pandemic the sector between Milan – Malpensa and New York was the second-largest long-haul market in Italy where 1,018,956 passengers were carried.

New Flights and restarts

Milan – Malpensa (MXP) and Chicago O’ Hare (ORD) will once again be connected non-stop after 14 years. As of May 6, United will fly between the two airports with daily service on 243-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in three classes.

From its mega hub in Atlanta (ATL) Delta Air Lines will resume service to Milan – Malpensa (MXP) in May with five flights per week on Boeing 767-300ERs and will bring it to daily from June 2. The last operation of this route by the carrier was in the summer of 2019.

The capital of Lombardy will once again be connected to Canada after a two-year suspension due to the pandemic. As of May 21, Air Canada resumes operations between Toronto (YYZ) and Milan – Malpensa (MXP) via Montreal (YUL) with five weekly flights on 297-seat Airbus A330-300s in three classes. In 2019 this route mobilized 126,803 passengers.

Following the bankruptcy of  Air Italy, flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco will not be available for this summer on Milan – Malpensa (MXP), and American Airlines will keep suspended its service from Miami (MIA) to the capital of Lombardy.
