Copa Airlines Boeing 737-800 runway excursion in Panama: What We Know

On the night of Sunday, September 25, a Copa Airlines Boeing 737-800 went off the runway upon landing at Tocumen International Airport, in Panama. According to information provided by the company, no injuries were reported among passengers and personnel.

The plane, with registration number HP-1539CMP and 12.7 years old, was covering route CM135 between Mexico City and the Panamanian capital when, for unknown reasons, it ran off the runway during landing.

From what can be seen in the images, the weather conditions at Tocumen airport presented moderate to heavy rain.

Update: Copa Airlines shared a statement, which we transcribe:

«Copa Airlines communicates that its flight CM135 today between Mexico City and Panama City was involved in an incident when it ran off the runway during its landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama. The Boeing 737-800NG with registration number HP-1539 departed from Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City at 5:26pm local time.  

We have confirmation that there are no injuries as a result of this incident. Our priority is the well-being of the passengers and crew on board the flight, and we will provide them with the necessary assistance. We are also working with the appropriate authorities to gather all the information necessary to investigate the incident.»
