At an event held at the Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá hotel in Madrid, British low-cost airline Jet2.com celebrated yesterday the twentieth anniversary of the start of its operations in Spain. The ceremony was attended by Steve Heapy, the company’s CEO, as well as stakeholders from the Spanish tourism industry.
Since its first flight to the Iberian country, linking Leeds and Málaga airports in January 2003, Jet2.com has carried more than thirty million passengers between the United Kingdom and Spain. During this time, the company has become one of the leading foreign leisure operators in Spain, one of the most popular holiday destinations for British citizens.
In this regard, Jet2.com highlighted that it is already the leading airline in terms of passengers carried between the United Kingdom and Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Las Palmas, Tenerife, Ibiza, Menorca and Reus, some of the most popular destinations for tourists living in Great Britain.
On the other hand, both Jet2.com and tour operator Jet2holidays consolidated their position in 2022 as leaders in terms of passengers carried between the Unite Kingdom and the Canary Islands, with almost two million travellers, as well as to and from the Balearic Islands, with around one million passengers.
Last year, Jet2.com carried 4.1 million passengers between the two countries and became the second most used airline by British citizens to travel to Spain. During the summer season, the busiest period between the two markets, the airline recorded higher passenger numbers than those reported in 2019.
Projections ahead of the summer season 2023
Looking ahead to the 2023 summer season, the airline is forecasting 4% growth compared to the same period in 2022. In total, it expects to offer around three and a half million seats on flights to Spain, and operate up to 661 flights per week at the peak of the season.
In addition, Jet2.com will launch two new routes between the United Kingdom and Spain in the coming months: in May it will start operating between Glasgow (GLA) and Girona (GRO), while it will offer connections between Bristol (BRS) and Málaga (AGP) from July.
