LATAM Brasil monitors ground operations with cameras and artificial intelligence

LATAM Brasil became the first airline in the South American country to monitor part of its ground operations with cameras and artificial intelligence (AI). According to a press release, the new technology is capable of measuring in real time the punctuality, quality and efficiency of the service with the aim of contributing to reducing the time aircraft spend on the ground.

The innovation, which is already operational at São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), was developed over twelve months through a partnership between LATAM Labs, the company’s open innovation centre, and Synaptic Aviation, a company specialising in this kind of solutions.

New LATAM Brasil monitoring system in Guarulhos

The monitoring system at Guarulhos, LATAM’s main hub in Brazil, uses cameras and artificial intelligence to track all movements of the ground operation.

The technology provides operational metrics on expected take-off times, gate utilisation time and the time required by the various aircraft support units on the ground to complete their tasks.

In addition, it minimises the risk of damage by foreign objects on the apron, checks the condition of the boarding chutes and provides valuable preventive information related to operational safety.

When a company aircraft is detected approaching its parking position, artificial intelligence begins to monitor the activity initiated around it. From this, a complete record of all the events around it is obtained and recorded on video.
