Spirit Airlines has significantly expanded its operations at the Luis Muñoz International Airport (SJU) in Puerto Rico by adding five new connections and increasing frequencies on four services to the United States.

The American low-cost carrier will launch nonstop flights from SJU to Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), and Detroit (DTW), along with a one-stop service to Hartford (BDL) starting from June 7. This major expansion positions Spirit as the largest operator in Puerto Rico to date.

In addition, Spirit Airlines has increased its daily flights between San Juan and Orlando (MCO) to five, and added two daily flights connecting Baltimore (BWI), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), and Newark (EWR).

Bobby Schroeter, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Spirit Airlines, said, «Our commitment to Puerto Rico spans over two decades, and it’s exciting for us to celebrate today with an expansion that takes our SJU service to the largest in Spirit’s history, now serving 16 nonstop destinations, as well as increased frequencies to key markets.» He expressed gratitude to the Puerto Rican community, the Spirit family members in San Juan, Aguadilla, and Ponce, and their valuable airport partners.

Spirit Airlines currently provides around 1,000 jobs for Puerto Ricans across the three airports it operates and its maintenance facilities in Aguadilla. With this expansion, the company will add 80 more employees to its workforce on the island.

Jorge Hernández, President of Aerostar, welcomed the new Spirit Airlines routes, saying, «These new flights from Spirit, to and from our island, open the doors to new employment opportunities and increased commercial and tourist activity on the island

Carlos Mercado Santiago, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, expressed enthusiasm for the economic and market growth these flights will create for Puerto Rico as one of the main Caribbean tourist destinations. He stated, «Spirit’s decision to add new connections from five major US hubs and increase flight frequencies from four others aligns with our vision and strategy to further develop air access and strengthen overall tourism activity, a key sector of our economy
