Japan Airlines launched today a clothing rental service called “Any Wear, Anywhere”, which allows foreign tourists visiting Japan to save on luggage and reduce onboard weight. This service is one of the sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing pressure on greenhouse gas emissions at a cost.
The system will work in collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation, which will operate the booking platform to assist passengers in selecting suitable clothing for the season and their visit plans. The clothes will be delivered directly to the hotel and can be returned without the need for washing or ironing what has been used, as detailed by our associated media, Aeroin.
Japan Airlines is monitoring if there are significant reductions in the weight of checked baggage by passengers and will reveal the statistics when the trial is completed.
Furthermore, the airline aims to save fuel and costs, contributing to the company’s goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To accomplish this, they are looking for ways to implement new fuel recycling techniques and practices, as well as replacing single-use materials with more sustainable alternatives.
However, even when using sustainable fuel, the company will face significant limitations regarding fuel production and availability to meet the aviation industry’s needs. Therefore, alternative measures are required.
The trial period for this new service will run from July 5, 2023, to August 31, 2024.
To book the clothing, passengers need to visit the website Anywearanywhere.store and enter the flight reservation code, arrival and departure dates, as well as the pickup location.
