Back to normal: Chile’s passenger traffic recovers, but cargo transport declines

In the latest monthly report published by the Chilean Civil Aeronautical Board, detailed statistics about the regular commercial air transport are revealed, encompassing both passenger and cargo traffic at the national and international levels.

The figures presented are compared with those of the same period in 2022. In addition, a brief review of other relevant data and observations is provided in a second section of the report.

Passenger Movement

In June 2023, a total of 1,840,983 passengers travelled on domestic and international flights, which shows an increase of 28.3% compared to the same period in 2022. During the first six months of the year, the number of passengers transported on these flights rose to 11,906,218, marking an increase of 23.9% over the same period of the previous year.

If we focus exclusively on international flights arriving or departing from Chile, 722,389 passengers were transported in the month of June, constituting a growth of 42.5% compared to June 2022.

In an analysis of the January-June period, the number of passengers arriving or departing from Chile increased to 4,578,740. This number represents a significant increase of 54.2% compared to the first six months of 2022.

 

Domestic air traffic: Steady growth

In June, the number of passengers transported within Chile was 1,118,594, representing a growth of 20.5% compared to the same period of the previous year. Likewise, from January to June, the number of passengers transported within the country increased to 7,327,478, marking an increase of 10.3% compared to the same period of 2022.


Tonnes of Cargo and Its Comparison with 2022

In June, 34,025 tonnes of cargo were transported on domestic and international flights. This figure represents a growth of 7% compared to the same period in 2022. However, during the January-June period, 215,246 tonnes of cargo were transported on both domestic and international flights, indicating a decrease of 5.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

As for international cargo, 31,788 tonnes of cargo were transported with Chile as their origin or destination in June. This quantity shows an increase of 10.4% compared to the same period in 2022. Throughout the January to June period, 200,170 tonnes of cargo were transported with an international origin or destination, which means a drop of 3.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the domestic context, 2,238 tonnes of cargo were transported within Chile in June, representing a decrease of 25.5% compared to the same period in 2022. During the January to June period, 15,076 tonnes of cargo were transported nationally, equating to a decrease of 26.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.
