ITA Airways to fly to Chicago

As part of its intercontinental expansion plans, ITA Airways has scheduled to fly to a seventh destination to the United States. For the 2023 summer season, the Italian airline will have nonstop service between Rome-Fiumicino and Chicago O’Hare.

The former Alitalia flew between Rome and Chicago with a seasonal service during the summer, which ceased in September 2019. This route will serve the strong demand between Chicago and Italy, since Illinois is the seventh state with the largest Italian American population in the United States.

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Italian National Agency for Civil Aviation (ENAC), 211,773 passengers were mobilized between Rome-Fiumicino and Chicago O’Hare in 2019. This segment was the 13th busiest long-haul route at Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport.

Rome-Chicago flight schedule

Starts April 7, 2024

  • Rome – Chicago Flight 628 FCO 09:20 – ORD 13:10
  • Chicago – Rome Flight 629 ORD 15:10 – FCO 07:30+1

Route details

  • Initially the service will have six weekly flights.
  • Beginning June 1, 2024, the schedule will increase to daily flights.

The route will be operated on 256-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft (20 Business Class/17 Premium Economy/219 Economy) and 291-seat Airbus A330-900 aircraft (30 Business Class/24 Premium Economy/237 Economy). Promotional fares are available from $706 roundtrip.

ITA Airways’ new service adds 3,794 weekly seats on the Chicago-Italy segment. The Italian carrier competes in this market with American Airlines, which offers daily service from Chicago to Rome and Venice, and United Airlines, which provides nonstop service from Chicago to Rome and Milan-Malpensa.

By the 2024 summer season, ITA’s U.S. network will have services to New York, Boston, Miami, Washington-Dulles, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In addition, the airline will expand its North American offering with new service to Toronto-Pearson starting in May next year.
