Iberojet has resumed its flights using sustainable aviation fuel provided by Repsol. The airline has also committed to making these flights a regular occurrence month after month. The chosen operation to inaugurate the use of this fuel took place on October 24th, flying between Madrid and San José, Costa Rica, aboard an Airbus A350-900.

Sustainable fuel is produced from renewable raw materials, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 80% throughout its lifecycle compared to conventional sources. Iberojet also implements operational measures to optimize and improve the environmental impact of its flights.

With this flight, Iberojet launches the first phase of its Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) implementation plan, aligning itself with programs, measures, and regulations developed within the European Union to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in aviation by at least 55% by 2030. Iberojet’s Deputy General Director, José Ignacio Lugo, emphasized that “this marks the beginning of our new ESG Strategy 2026. One of Iberojet’s top priorities is to reduce the environmental impact of its operations through SAF use. Greenhouse gas emission reduction is a strategic focus for the airline. Therefore, we will adhere to all EU regulations regarding decarbonization.”

Meanwhile, Oliver Fernández, Director of International Aviation at Repsol, added that “this agreement with Iberojet strengthens our commitment to the sector and represents another step in Repsol’s dedication to renewable fuels. We are ready to supply the aviation industry with the sustainable fuels it needs.” Repsol is a pioneer in manufacturing sustainable aviation fuels in Spain. The company will launch Spain’s first advanced biofuels plant in Cartagena, Murcia, producing 250,000 tons of renewable fuels annually from waste materials.
