In a strategic move to bolster its operations, SunExpress has charted out an ambitious fleet expansion by committing to a substantial order of Boeing 737 MAX airplanes. The order, which was made public today at the Dubai Airshow, involves a mix of firm purchases and optional acquisitions, allowing the airline to increase its total number of aircraft significantly. This strategic decision could see SunExpress’s fleet grow to a projected total of up to 90 aircraft, effectively doubling its capacity by 2033.
As part of this expansion, the airline has committed to 45 new aircraft, comprising 28 of the 737-8 model and 17 of the 737-10 model, which is the largest in the MAX series. Additionally, SunExpress retains the option to purchase up to 45 more, providing the carrier with the flexibility to scale its operations based on future market conditions and demands.
The addition of these new aircraft is set to enhance SunExpress’s operational efficiency and service offering, as the CEO, Max Kownatzki, outlined the company’s intentions to adapt to a post-pandemic market with a stronger and more versatile fleet. «The new 737-10 model,» he explained, «will be a game-changer for us, allowing for increased capacity on our most popular routes.»
The 737-8 can accommodate between 162 to 200 passengers in various configurations and offers a range of up to 6,480 kilometers, while the 737-10 seats up to 230 passengers and has a range of up to 5,740 kilometers. These aircraft are expected to contribute to a 20% reduction in fuel use and carbon emissions compared to the models they will replace, underscoring the environmental considerations central to SunExpress’s growth plan.
SunExpress’s strategic fleet enhancement plan follows a year where the airline’s passenger traffic neared the 11 million mark, a robust performance demonstrating its significant role in connecting Europe and Türkiye with holiday destinations. The expansion is a proactive measure to cement the airline’s position in the travel industry, ready to accommodate an anticipated upswing in travel demand in the coming years.
