Record Passenger Numbers Expected This Holiday Season, says TSA

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for a historic holiday season, expecting to screen 30 million passengers over the Thanksgiving period, which stretches from November 17 to November 28. TSA Administrator David Pekoske predicts record-breaking numbers, as 2023 has already witnessed seven of the top ten busiest days in TSA’s operational history. The agency is proactively coordinating with airline and airport partners to manage the surge and maintain screening efficiency, aiming to keep wait times below 10 minutes for TSA PreCheck® and under 30 minutes for standard lanes.

TSA’s busiest days are anticipated to fall on November 21, 22, and 26, with the latter possibly surpassing the June 30 peak of nearly 2.9 million passengers. In preparation for the influx, TSA advises passengers to pack smart, check prohibited items, ensure they carry acceptable identification, and arrive at the airport two hours before their flight. The introduction of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) at select airports allows for streamlined identity verification using facial recognition, offering a more efficient passenger experience.

With the highest-ever recorded enrollment of over 17.6 million in TSA PreCheck®, travelers are encouraged to take advantage of expedited screening. The TSA also reminds travelers of proper firearm transport protocol and the hefty penalties associated with violations. New screening technologies, including Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, are in place at some airports, enhancing security and reducing the need for physical bag checks.

For passengers requiring assistance, the TSA Cares helpline is available, and real-time support is offered via the @AskTSA service on various social media platforms. TSA stresses the importance of vigilance and reporting suspicious activities, echoing the «If You See Something, Say Something™» campaign. The administration also calls for patience and appreciation for the frontline workers dedicated to ensuring safe and secure travel.
