The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) has put up for sale one of its Airbus A340-300s, previously used for transporting high-ranking politicians, including Chancellor Angela Merkel. However, the aircraft has a history of technical problems that have resulted in travel delays for prominent personalities.

The A340 for sale, registration 16+01, was delivered to Lufthansa in 1999 and transferred to the Luftwaffe in 2011. The aircraft offers a luxurious interior environment, with seating for passengers in economy and business classes, as well as an exclusive lounge for VIPs. It also features a meeting room, a private office, and a spacious fully equipped bathroom.

The decision to retire the two A340-300s from the air force was brought forward due to the aforementioned technical issues. As a replacement, new A350-900s were acquired to effectively assume the roles.

Another A340 aircraft, registration 16+02, was sold last year. Meanwhile, the currently for-sale plane, registration 16+01, is parked in Cologne, where potential buyers have the opportunity to evaluate the plane before making an offer.

With over 54,500 flight hours and more than 8,300 landings and takeoffs in its history, the aircraft will be sold to the highest bidder. According to Vebeg, the aircraft can be delivered at an airport chosen by the buyer. It’s an opportunity for those seeking a large VIP aircraft, as long as they are prepared to deal with its known issues.
