Tocumen International Airport (AITSA) announced plans to clear the current cargo terminal platform, which currently houses six out-of-service aircraft. The announcement coincided with the observance of World Environment Day.
The project, named Aviapods, was formalized through resolution 030-JD-22, signed by the airport authority’s board on March 10, 2022.
The aircraft to be removed are: a Convair 580 CVL, a Douglas DC-8-63, a Boeing 727-277, a Learjet 25, and two Boeing 727-25F.
Additionally, the same platform houses other abandoned aircraft and numerous unused containers, covering an approximate area of 14,000 m².
The six aircraft involved in the Aviapods project will be donated and repurposed for educational support and use by security institutions. This project aims to promote sustainability and civil aviation in the Republic of Panama.
AITSA’s general manager, Raffoul Arab, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Treegacy to carry out the cargo ramp cleaning activities. These activities include cleaning, draining, dismantling, cutting, removing, and transporting the aircraft out of the cargo terminal.
