Singapore Airlines is the first international airline to confirm that it will begin operations at Western Sydney Airport after its opening in 2026. Other airlines that confirmed they would offer flights in this $5.3 billion project are Qantas and Jetstar. The new airport is close to 80% of its construction.

The new airport will operate 24 hours a day, with a 3,700-meter runway that makes it suitable for receiving aircraft of the size of the Airbus A380. Singapore Airlines added more capacity on its route to Sydney in November 2023, with a fifth daily flight. The airline’s low-cost subsidiary, Scoot, has 12 weekly flights between Singapore and Sydney.

In June last year, Qantas and Jetstar announced their plans to operate the new airport and establish a domestic hub. Qantas will base five aircraft and ten Jetstars once Western Sydney Airport is operational in late 2026. Qantas will initially use narrowbody aircraft flying to destinations including Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Kingsford Smith International Airport handled 9.7 million passengers in the second quarter of 2024, up 6.4% on the previous year and close to pre-pandemic levels. Under current projections, Western Sydney Airport will have a capacity of 2.5 million passengers each quarter.
