The expansion works at the Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito have reached 35% completion, according to the concessionaire Corporación Quiport. This project, involving an investment of USD 74.2 million, will add 17,000 m² to the passenger terminal across its four levels and 35,000 m² to the aircraft parking apron.
More than 350 workers are involved in the construction, which includes tasks such as the installation of fire suppression systems, power grids, communication cables, air conditioning, and drainage. Additionally, the fixed structure for the new passenger boarding bridge is being installed, and high-strength hydraulic concrete is being poured on the aircraft apron to support heavy planes.
The new apron will accommodate one Code E aircraft (such as the Boeing 777) and two Code C aircraft (such as the Airbus A320).
According to Diego Álvarez, Quiport’s Design and Construction Manager, the expansion will increase the terminal’s usable area by 25%, improving public spaces, check-in counters, the baggage claim area, international pre-boarding zones, baggage processing, and the international VIP lounge, among other services.
Capacity increase and growth projection
With this expansion, the airport will increase its annual capacity from 5 million to 7 million passengers, representing a significant boost for tourism and business in Ecuador. Ramón Miró, Quiport’s President and CEO, emphasized that this project is part of the Airport Master Plan, which guides the orderly growth of the infrastructure.
«The increase in processing capacity represents more opportunities for tourism and business travel, creating more jobs,» said Miró.
In January 2025, the equipment for the new baggage handling system, manufactured abroad, is expected to arrive in the country. These systems will modernize baggage processing in line with the expansion goals.
