Guarulhos Airport to Receive $1.4 Billion Investment After ANAC Approval

The airport of Guarulhos, in São Paulo, will receive new investments from the concessionaire GRU Airport, amounting to approximately 1.4 billion reais, after the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) approved the modification of the concession contract.

With this decision, the airport’s infrastructure will be expanded and modernized, improving the quality of services provided to users, reported Aeroin.

In a deliberative meeting held on Wednesday, November 27, ANAC’s Board ratified the terms of the contractual renegotiation carried out within the scope of the Secretariat for External Control of Consensual Resolution and Conflict Prevention (SecexConsenso) of the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU).

Concession term

This renegotiation extends the concession term until November 23, 2033.

According to the decision agreed upon by the TCU, the concessionaire must invest R$ 400 million in the immediate recovery of the airport’s service level. Since these investments were part of the original obligations of the concession contract, the amount will not be subject to economic-financial rebalancing by the granting authority and must be fully covered by the concessionaire.

Additionally, other investments, amounting to R$ 1 billion, will be made to adapt the infrastructure to the increased demand for passengers and aircraft, as well as to improve the airport’s safety level. To enable this stage of the contract, the concession term will be extended as part of the economic-financial rebalancing.

Safer airports

The renegotiation of the contract also resulted in the commitment to modernize the security systems under the “Aeroportos+Seguros” program, including measures against acts of unlawful interference.

Advanced equipment will be acquired to integrate passenger processing, baggage control, and migration, such as X-rays, explosive detectors, and facial recognition scanners. These items, which will receive investments of R$ 450 million, aim to enhance security and improve efficiency in passenger identification and baggage check-in processes.
