ITA Airways, Alitalia’s successor, began operations on October 15, and has already announced its strategic plans with regard to its destination network, sustainability and the introduction of its new image.
Destination network and future alliance
The new airline will initially have a network of 44 destinations and 59 routes, which will grow during 2022 to 58 destinations and 74 routes, with its main hubs being Rome’s Fiumicino and Milan-Linate airports. By 2025 they expect to reach 74 destinations and 89 routes. Meanwhile, ITA will also offer charter flights.
While waiting for a strategic partner, ITA Airways will join the Skyteam alliance, gradually guaranteeing its customer’s codeshares with all the airlines belonging to it.
As a side note, the website already offers connections through Delta Air Lines, a former Alitalia partner.
In November ITA will start flying to New York (JFK), while in March 2022 it will land in Miami (MIA) and Boston (BOS).
Next year it will add more destinations in the United States such as Washington DC (IAD), while on the West Coast it will reach Los Angeles between June 1 and October 22. In South America, it plans to operate to Sao Paulo (GRU) and Buenos Aires (EZE).
Fleet and sustainability
ITA Airways will start operating a fleet of 52 aircraft consisting of 18 Airbus A319s, 27 Airbus A320s, and 7 Airbus A330-200s. By 2022, they expect to have 13 wide-body and 65 single-aisle aircraft, reaching 105 aircraft by 2025.
ITA’s first 10 flights from Rome used sustainable aviation fuel, through a project of the companies Eni and ADR, as part of other initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
