On Thursday 23, Viva Aerobus submitted a formal application to Colombia’s Civil Aeronautics Authority for permits to operate new routes that will connect Medellin (MDE) with Mexico City and Cancun.
The Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier intends to operate seven weekly frequencies on each route with third and fourth freedom of the air traffic rights on Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.
Viva Aerobus will have to compete on the Medellin – Mexico City route against Aeromexico and Viva, which both operate one daily flight.
In the case of Medellin – Cancun, competition will be with Avianca (one daily flight), Viva (5 weekly flights), and Wingo (4 weekly flights).
Viva Aerobus landed in Colombia (and South America) on August of this year flying between Mexico City and Bogota, as part of the deployment that airlines from both countries have started to perform in the market after the closure of Interjet, and also to attend a growing demand since Colombia and Mexico have remained very flexible towards international tourism.
On December 16, Viva Aerobus inaugurated its second route to Colombia, between Mexico City and Bogota.
